We All Have To Do It

A friend of mine asked me the other day how it felt to be pushing 50. I had to stop and think about that for a minute, how does it feel? If you are close to or even past 50 then I think you may find a chuckle in here some where.

What we have seen in 50 years

If you are like me and just hitting 50 there is allot you may remember hearing about but not seeing. JFK was shot in Dallas by a magic bullet. I remember my mother crying but i didn't understand why. "One small step for man, One giant step for mankind" The first man on the moon. MLK and all the riots. The protests over Vietnam. Burning of draft cards and Bra's. A president swearing that "He was not a crook" Plus countless other things that are too many to list.

Things that have come about

Remember driving around on Saturday night playing your 8-track as loud as it would go? From there we went to cassette tapes. The first car phones that you could barely pick up, the battery was so big it needed its own bag. The first push button phone was a prize to be had. If you were the first on the block to get one you looked up to by all your friends. Color TV with a remote was another prize to be had. Everyone wanted to come over and watch your TV. And don't forget when you got your first Microwave, remember how big and heavy it was? And who doesn't remember there first computer? or even a calculator. It was amazing that something could do math that fast. Now we have cell phones and Ipods, MP3 players, CD's and hand held computers that have more power then the whole system of computers they used to put a man on the moon.

What was on TV

A Talking horse Mr Ed.Lassie, a smart dog that always got Timmy out of trouble. The Lone Ranger and his faithful sidekick. 12 o'clock high, The rat patrol, Bonanza,Gun Smoke, Wanted Dead or alive, F-Troop, Petticoat Junction, Perry Mason, Dragnet, Car 54 where are you. The list goes on and on. But just thinking about all those things brought a smile to my face.

To answer my friends question

Pushing 50 is absolutely GREAT! I have lived through some of the most amazing leaps in technology of the last 200 years. I have seen my kids grow up and start their own lives. I have grand kids to enjoy, spoil then send home. I have my health and my house is paid for. I am looking forward to pushing 60 just to see what new and exciting things are coming down the road. I hope I have spurred some memories in you that brought a smile to your face. The last 50 have had it's bumps but that is what makes you smile at the good things in life. Please feel free to add your memories down below in the comment box.

Thank you for reading this, I hope you enjoyed it.

Great article!! I'm not 50 yet, but i hope that when I look back in 25 years, I will have just as many fond memories and milestones to ponder :) While I think it will be different for my generation (as we will remember MTV, reality shows and the like) writing and keeping records of those everyday things that make life what it is are some of the most interesting and fun for readers and rememberers! Great job!!
